We often spend time on the visual aspects of our home- from furniture to paint to rugs to artwork- and each adds a layer to the experience, ideally working in harmony to create the perfect mood for the room. But how often have you thought about the layer of scent in your home? Like what we see, what we smell creates an impression- positive or negative- and helps to set our mood. And, since our sense of smell is directly tied to the limbic part of our brain which controls emotion, the scent of a room is an important layer to telling the story and creating the ambience for that particular space.
Some of the ways that I use scent (and ONLY use essential oils!) around my home include:
Kitchen: Often the heart of the house, I am drawn to comforting and invigorating scents in the kitchen. These include cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, lemon, tangerine and other citrus oils
Bathroom: I want my bathroom to feel both relaxing and clean so I'm drawn to oils like lemon, spruce, fir, pine, lavender and eucalyptus.
Daughter's bedroom: I want HAPPY, comforting scents in my girl's rooms so I lean toward lavender, tangerine, orange and chamomile.
Home Office: A place that generally requires focus and concentration, I like to have ginger, rosemary, peppermint and clary sage in this room.
Bedroom: I like seductive scents flowing in my bedroom so I use oils like ylang ylang, jasmine, lavender, patchouli, and geranium to set the mood.
Dining room: I prefer scents that will blend easily with whatever we are serving, so citrus oils like grapefruit, orange, lemon and tangerine are my ideal choices.
Of course, I also diffuse the three WCB scents- SONOMA, NAPA and SANTA BARBARA and tend to rotate them based mostly on the time of year and type of room.
To diffuse the oils there are numerous choices out there and each has it's pluses and minuses. One of my favorite online herbal stores is Mountain Rose Herbs and here is a link to their collection of diffusers: Mountain Rose Herbs Diffusers.
My favorite is the Aroma Mist Ultrasonic Diffuser but I also love the good old fashioned ceramic diffusers that use tea lights.
While you are on their website check out their selection of high quality essential oils also- they have some fun ones!
